Author/Illustrator: Hazar Elbayya
Publisher: Anne Schwartz Books
Age: 4-8
Islamic Content: Palestinian Story
Concerns: None
Summary:
Salam planted an olive seed that her grandfather gave her. She checked on it for days and watered it for more, and with a lot of patience the seedling sprouted. With time, love and care, the seedling was slowly growing. Until one day, soldiers came and destroyed everything in their way, including Salam’s little olive tree.
Review:
SubhanAllah. This book is powerfully beautiful. It is a short story, that is easily understood by young hearts and minds. The author/illustrator brings everything together in a beautiful way through olive trees. Olive trees that are deeply rooted to the land and connect the people above it. I absolutely love the important messaging of the story and the colour palette of the illustrations. There is no Islam in the book, other than a masjid on one of the city spreads. If you can get your hands on this book to read to your child/children, please do. It will spark important discussions.
