Islamic Content: Name Faruq

Review:
This book provides a glimpse of Indo-Guyanese heritage through family and food. Faruq wants to cook just like his grandmother Ajee, but she tells him he doesn’t need to know how to cook if he wants to be a doctor like his father. disappointed, Faruq hears a voice from the other side of the fence, and his curiosity takes him to the next-door neighbour who is willing to teach Faruq everything he needs to know about cooking.
The story and the illustrations are brightly rich with culture and delicious traditional food. Although the name Faruq can pique the interest of Muslim readers, this book has zero Islam, rather it focuses on cultural representation. This can be a great discussion starter about gender stereotypes when it comes to careers.
