Islamic Content: Stories of Hijabi Athletes from around the World
Concerns: None
Books like this often times sacrifice Islamic sensitivities for the sake of being overtly inclusive. Maybe why a part of me felt indifferent about seeking out a copy. And when I received a copy for the awards, I cracked it open with scepticism.
As I went on reading from one biography to another, I grew more and more fond of it with every page. While we don’t need to prove the diverse abilities of Hijabi women to others, we need books like this as inspiration for our Muslim kids that hijab does not limit us.
I love so many things about this non-fiction resource. The hijabi athletes come from so many backgrounds and different walks of life. Some from the west, some from the east, converts to Islam, a vast range of sports and they play at different levels. I love that this compilation consists of mainly athletes we have never heard of before, a total of 13 biographies. The backmatter includes a list of even more HIjabi athletes, information about hijab and modest sportswear, glossary and resources.
