Summary:
Safiyyah’s Muslim identity keeps her safe from the Nazi occupation in France. However, the same cannot be said about her Jewish neighbours. She witnesses injustice in so many ways; her best friend has left to find safety, the very library she spends hours reading stories and learning about history is a threat to the occupying forces. She feels helpless but worse yet, her father, who is a religious leader does not seem to do anything to help those in danger even though he has raised Safiyyah to stand up to injustice. But soon enough, Safiyyah learns what her father’s strange behaviour is all about…
Review:
This book is inspired by the true story of the Grand Mosque of Paris that saved the lives of many Jews during WW2. It is a book that is eye opening for every reader, young or old. The story explores family relations and friendships in a time of war and chaos and how war effects everyone, not only those who are targeted. The story caters the middle grade age group and is perfectly serves the readers. Safiyyah is a brave and strong character in the book. The role that Muslims have played in hiding, safekeeping and helping the Jewish population flee to safety from the Nazis. I love that the actual Grand Mosque is at the centre of this story and Islam is weaved in as an important thread in the story. The book is fast paced and is able to keep the reader on their toes to get to the end of the book. Great historical fiction for middle grade readers, Muslim or not.
