Review:
I have been anticipating the release of this book for so long! I was blessed to have seen a very early draft of this manuscript and to see this final version of this story brought to life is extraordinary. There are so many Syrian picture books written by non Syrians so this story to be finally published as an own voice holds do much weight.
This brilliant story is so heartwarming and incredibly beautiful. It is a retelling of Gift of the Magi and is set in Souq al-Hamidiyeh and the Umayyad Masjid of Damascus, Syria. Every spread is a spectacle that deserves the time to soak in the beauty of not only the illustrations but also the words. This story brings out the Muslim Syrian hope, joy in the midst of struggle and loss. I do wish the font size was slightly bigger so it would be easier to be able to read at group story times. If you haven’t preordered a copy, don’t wait up. Get it for your loved ones in time for Eid!
