Review:
I purchased this book last year and because it is set in Ramadan, I had put it aside. Purchasing books supports Muslim authors, publishers and booksellers to make more Muslim stories available to our kids. With that said, as readers, we expect good quality stories that captivate our attention. But when the books we purchase don’t meet our expectations, it leaves us frustrated once again. Unfortunately this book fell short.
The book is text heavy. There is quite a bit of unnecessary text that I found myself skipping over many lines. The plot is a bit far fetched if you ask me. Grandmother came from afar with a plane. So when there is no candy tin, the kids are disappointed. however, they are reunited with the candy tin when someone they know found it on the same plane Haboba was on.
Honestly as a reader, I want to know why were these candies were so special? Is it because they aren’t available to buy locally? Is it a special cultural treat? If I understood how special and rare these treats are, this would create a relatable emotional connection with the story. As an adult reading it it created more questions in my mind. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get my kids to read it. They flipped through the book, tried the first few pages and put it back on the shelf.
