Sido’s Prayer Beads by Sumayyah Hussein

📚 Sido’s Prayer Beads 📚
Author: Sumayyah Hussein
Illustrator: Rania Hasan
Publisher: Ruqaya’s Bookshelf
Age: 4-8

Islamic Content: Dhikr
Concerns: None

Summary:

Musa’s grandfather is losing his memory and one way he remembers his stories is through the prayer beads he made. As time goes on, even the prayer beads don’t help to bring Sido’s memories back.

Review:

Regardless which ruling you follow about the prayer beads, this story will capture your heart in a way you will never expect. I have a soft spot in my heart for stories with grandfathers, maybe because both of mine passed on early in my childhood. However, regardless of what your experience and your memories are with yours this book is heart wrenching yet tender all at once.

The book touches on the topic of Alzheimer’s in a delicate way even kids can comprehend. I love that dhikr is central to this story and the relationship between a grandson and his Sido. The way the whole story came full circle, as a reader, was so fulfilling. I think this is one of the best books published by Ruqaya’s Bookshelf to date. The last page includes a hadith about dhikr and information about Alzheimer’s disease.
