Review:
It is not often that I receive an arc copy of books this far in advance, so I am grateful to have gotten this one. I had the opportunity to read an early draft of this book and now having the finished copy and seeing the transformation this manuscript has undergone, has given me a new appreciation for the book world and publishing industry.
This story grapples with navigating personal identities that every individual has to come to terms with. Kareem is oblivious to the intensifying political climate in America as he tries to overcome bullying and making the football team. His feelings of not being Syrian enough because he doesn’t speak perfect Arabic nor does he feel American enough to be in the team. Kareem’s voice and chatacter has the reader rooting for him.
Middle grade books with male Muslim protagonists don’t come around often enough, so this book is a much needed story. It’s written in verse so it’s perfect even for kids who are indimidated to read novels.
Get your hands on this book. Pre-order your copy, comes out in September!
