📚 Noura’s Crescent Moon 📚
Author: Zainab Khan
Illustrator: Nabila Adani
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Age: 4-8
Islamic Content: a story of sighting the Eid ul Fitr Moon
Concerns: None
Summary:
Noura and her family venture out to a community picnic to sight the new crescent moon. 🌙 A new moon means Eid is the next day, a day to celebrate the end of Ramadan.
Review:
We grew up following the calculated calendar of the new moon for Ramadan and Eid. Only in my adult life I have learned about the sunnah of moon sighting. So I can see Noura’s experience to be a nostalgic one for those who followed the sunnah growing up or even serve as inspiration to make new family traditions of moon sighting.
The story doesn’t have a plot, it is the reader following the journey of the character and her moon sighting adventure. The text is at time lyrical and maybe anlittle advanced for the age group, so theres lots of opportunities to discuss what is happening in the pages. The illustrations are beautiful and at times whimsical.
Mentions the call to maghrib prayer, chaand raat, but that’s the extent to what is discussed Islamically.
In my opinion the backmatter is what really makes this book stand out. Discussing facts about Ramadan, Eid, chaand raat, Islamic calendar and more.
It’s an adorable story with a lot of heart and purpose.
