Summary:

Rumi is the new, quiet kid at school. He likes to spend his recess under an old willow tree. When Asher’s bullying goes too far and Han steps in; he finds an incredibly welcoming canvas on the dirt under that willow tree.

Review:

This is such an important story to read to our kids. What happens to be a bullying incident sparks an outcome of new friendships and kindness. I really love that the plot explores the guilt of bullying expressed in the facial expressions, posture and actions of Asher rather than a meaningless apology we often see in books. The story is beautifully executed and and easy to for readers to follow. There is no Islam or any indication that Rumi is Muslim other than his popular name. I appreciated the author’s note and how her son’s lived experience became the inspiration for this story. This book is an important one to have in all classrooms and discuss with kids.
