Concerns: implications of domestic violence

Summary:

Amal has a special cape that she finds safety and comfort in, even through the storms. Mama tells her to remember Allah, Al-Aziz, and reminds her about the meaning of her name.

Review:

This book is intended to be an informational source to bring awareness about domestic violence in our community. The book is not textually explicit. The DV episodes are are described as ‘storms.’ The illustrations have silhouette implications of what is happening behind the scenes. Although the book begins with the heavy storms, there is a happy ending and hope for new beginnings come about.

I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect. I suggest that the adults read this book first and digest it and have a mental plan on how to navigate this story with the little ones. This is such an amazing source to help those who might be going through DV and help little ones better process what exactly happening or what they are going through. This can also be used as a conversation starter for DV.
