Little People, Big Dreams: Muhammed Ali by Ma Isabel Sanchez Vegara

This book is an introductory biography of Muhammed Ali and his life condensed into a kid friendly context. The book begins with Cassius Clay and the bicycle incident which inspired him to get into boxing. Then discusses his success in his boxing career, his conversion to Islam and his name change and finally, touches up on his activism against injustice and his refusal to participate in war. This book is a simple and easy introduction for little ones. I am not going to get into the sport itself what what Islam says but at least I wish the scene where he is depicted in salah with boxer shorts was done accurately and shown him in modest clothing. It is really insensitive to our dresscode requirement for prayers. The backmatter provides more details about Muhammed Ali’s life.

Me and Muhammed Ali by Jabari Asim

This book is a little boy’s, Langston, encounter with Muhammed Ali when he came to visit his hometown. The author drew inspiration from his own experience and encounter with Muhammed Ali to write this picture book that highlights Muhammed Ali’s kindness, sympathy and good character towards others. Langston has a special love for language and poetry so he finds beautiful inspiration in Muhammed Ali’s flow in poetry. I really appreciated that this was such a different angle that this book offers the readers.

These books paired together give some insight on who Muhammed Ali was on a personal level as well as professional.
