Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour

This powerful message of friendship among refugees in a temporary placement is extraordinary to say the least. Lubna is a girl who finds comfort and friendship in a pebble in the midst of the occurrences in her world. She finds herself waking up in a tent and aside from her caring father, the pebble is all she’s got. She meets a shy little boy, Amir, who, in essence, finds solace in both Lubna and her pebble.

This book focuses on the connection the characters build rather than where and what they are running from. As for their identity, we only recognize them by their Muslim names. The illustrations are beautifully executed to set the tone and the mood of the story so perfectly.

This captivating story takes me back exactly 20 years, a sensitive time in my life; a time of fear, survival and escape. The journey of a refugee is never an easy one. Just like this book is now to my kids, another bedtime story, that is what my lived experience will be for them, just another story. Grateful for everything, alhamdulilah.

📚

Definitely, an important addition to our library and would highly recommend it to yours.
